Livestock Ministry, GIZ Agree on Joint Action Plan for Sustainable, Climate-Resilient Production Systems

The Technical Working Group on Climate Change (TWG-CC) of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the GIZ Transformation of Agri-Food Systems (TAFS) Cluster have agreed on a joint action framework to advance sustainable and climate-resilient livestock systems in Nigeria.

An alignment workshop held on Monday, 20th October 2025, under the Livestock for Sustainable Systems (LIFESYS) project, produced a shared framework to harmonise the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NLGAS) with LIFESYS objectives, ensuring that the Ministry’s ongoing programmes reflect sustainability, climate resilience, and global best practices.

Speaking during the session, the Director, Sanitary Mandate and Climate Change, Dr. Ishiyaku Mohammed Musa, explained that the objective of the gathering was to align key pillars of the Ministry’s strategic plan with the sustainability focus of the LIFESYS project.

“This workshop provides an opportunity to co-create interventions that reinforce our national strategic plan. The aim is to ensure that, moving forward, we remain on track and fully aligned with both national and global sustainability goals,” Dr. Musa said.

Similarly, GIZ’s Cluster Coordinator, Dr. Andrea Ruediger, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to achieve climate-smart livestock systems through technical collaboration, regional knowledge exchange, and access to international climate finance, particularly through the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

The meeting also identified priority areas for collaboration, including policy alignment, development of climate finance proposals, and capacity-building initiatives.
